Diastole and its Beneficial Role in Coronary Atherogenesis

چکیده
The purpose of this study is to elucidate the role, which Wall Shear Stress (WSS) differentiation between diastole and systole plays in coronary atherosclerosis. A finite-element analysis of the 3D, pulsatile, nonNewtonian, heamodynamics of the normal human left main coronary artery bifurcation, based on published data, is performed. The time averaged mean WSS in the entire left coronary artery bifurcation region ranged from 0.086 to 5.97 N/m2. Arterial WSS was significantly lower on the lateral walls of the bifurcation, for all tested time steps of the pulse cycle. The distribution of low WSS along the walls is in agreement with the common locations of atheroma. It is the systolic period, rather than the diastolic one, which is probably associated with the development of atherosclerotic plaques, due to significantly lower WSS values during systole.

Vascular endothelial ageing, heartbeat after heartbeat.
The vascular endothelium starts to age at the first heartbeat. There is no longer a need to demonstrate that an increased resting heart rate--above 70 b.p.m.--is associated with the onset of cardiovascular events and reduces lifespan in humans. Each cardiac cycle imposes a mechanical constraint on the arteries, and we would like to propose that this mechanical stress damages the vascular endoth...
متن کاملBeneficial effects of neuronal nitric oxide synthase in atherosclerosis.
Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is the only NOS isoform expressed in normal coronary arteries. However, all 3 NOS isoforms—eNOS, inducible NOS (iNOS), and neuronal NOS (nNOS)—are found in human atherosclerotic plaques.1 Precise studies of knockout mice have uncovered the role of eNOS and iNOS in atherogenesis (Figure). The eNOS isoform protects against atherosclerosis, because mice lac...
متن کاملVitamin E Status and Hyperlipidemia
The oxidative modification hypothesis of atherogenesis suggests that the oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL) plays an important role in the progression of the disease [1]. This theory implies that antioxidants, such as vitamin E (the major lipophilic antioxidant in the body), should be beneficial in protecting and preventing atherosclerosis. A cardioprotective role for vitamin E is furt...
متن کاملRole of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-γ in Vascular Inflammation
Vascular inflammation plays a crucial role in atherosclerosis, and its regulation is important to prevent cerebrovascular and coronary artery disease. The inflammatory process in atherogenesis involves a variety of immune cells including monocytes/macrophages, lymphocytes, dendritic cells, and neutrophils, which all express peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ). PPAR-γ is a nucl...
متن کاملSelenium concentrations in plasma of patients with arteriographically defined coronary atherosclerosis.
A prospective epidemiological study (Lancet ii: 175-179, 1982) implicates low concentrations of selenium in plasma in coronary atherogenesis. We examined this relationship more directly by fluorometry of selenium in the plasma of 91 hospitalized patients who were being examined by coronary arteriography for clinical evaluation of chest pain. We observed a significant, inverse correlation betwee...
